the year was 1997. it was a year to remember, but most significant of all? duke nukem forever started development. in 2009, IT DIED an awful death when 3D Realms shut its doors. i used to spend forever playing duke nukem, on both a pc and my dad’s old ibm thinkpad. really, the cheesy lines ‘it’s time to kick ass and chew bubble gum…only i’m all outta gum’ delivered in the duke’s signature baritone voice thrilled me. the sick jokes [the level where the fast food restaurant and the animal shelter still grosses me out though] gave you fits of naughty giggles.
check out the image here, where some poor bastard in texas pre-ordered over a decade ago [awwwww]. hopefully gamestop will give him store credit. or, he could continue to dream. or sell the receipt on ebay. if i were him, i’d frame it and tell my grandchildren about it when they start talking about whatever the hell gaming development the future will bring. ohhhh the possibilities.
3D Realms, you are loved and missed.
