in what can only be seen as a sign of armageddon, we report that mr george “geohot” hotz is up to his old tricks. the man who hacked the iphone has now hacked the ps3. yes, you read that right. hacked the ps3.
geohot writes on his blog that the hack is just the foundations [aka the exploit code], and he’d ‘like to see the missing HV calls filled in, nice memory maps, the boot chain better documented, and progress on a 3D GPU driver. And of course, the search for a software exploit.’ he can’t do any of this himself though, because he ‘has a life.’ right. you did this for 5 weeks solid, and you have a life. uh huh, sure.
jokes aside, i do respect this guy. how amazing is this though? this is the holy grail. sony thought they were bulletproof! and now they’re not.
what it means to everyone remains a mystery. what does it mean for sony? their pride in their security is now shattered. a possible selling point ruined. can they recover? possibly. all those stupid firmware updates might help them out.
for the hardcore ps3 enthusiasts, does it mean that homemade games and apps can be written? i guess we can only wait and see.
however, for the less scrupulous among us, it potentially opens the door to piracy. it’s no secret you can download psp games. the quality of these games are usually ok – it’s just the constant corrupted save files that will break your heart. that’s balanced by the whole ‘fuck it, it’s free’ situation.
xbox and xbox 360 owners who are so inclined can download cracked copies of games. microsoft will ban you forever, of course… but that’s if they catch you.
yeesh. so much excitement today. i’ll keep you posted.
