hi, my name is obnoxious gamer and i need to stop buying video game merchandise…
…ok, i don’t think admitting it helped me any, despite what those groups like to pretend. but it brings an interesting point to the table, i feel.
i’m in a bit of a reflective mood today, i suppose. i’m moving in a few days, and i have been packing my things up like a mofo. i’m one person, but i have acquired an impressive amount of shit in this life. i kind of feel that most of it centers around the whole video game thing. even looking past the fact i have a pile of consoles, controllers and games, it’s the other game junk that’s concerning me. over the past few months, i’ve been building a video game action figure / general gaming merch collection. i can’t stop. fuck it, i don’t WANT to stop. i love it. i love having that kind of stuff in my place.
building the collection though has been a bit harder than i thought, since there’s a surprising shortage of promo items out there. i don’t know whether it’s the economy, or just a normal state for the world, but it really seems like there’s not much out there in terms of game stuff. there’s so much comic book shit, yet not many action figures. i’m heading to silver snail this week to pick up prototype’s alex mercer action figure. it seems to be pretty easily obtainable and i see it in most places where nerds gather. however, i cannot for the life of me find an assassin’s creed 2 action figure though. they apparently do exist, but it’s only in the mystical collector’s edition. i already have the game – i just want the action figure. some of you may think that i could simply buy it, and trade the game in. i would, but the trade-in values have already made a gang of small children weep and i don’t want that guilt on my soul again.
finding gear for fallout 3 has been equally tough. i heard a DJ on 102.1 the edge recently compare his success at beating fallout 3 to being a similar feeling to an olympic athlete winning a medal. it’s TRUE, fearless fred. i am totally with you on that one. i have also devoted hundreds of hours to this game, beating the shit out of capital wasteland creatures and in general spending far too much real time in a fictional land doing shit no one rational cares about. here’s the thing: i care. i want some merch to remember the good times, ya know? i scored the collector’s edition around may/june 2009. you know, the one with the lunch box, the bobblehead, etc. apart from that though, there’s not much out there unless you turn to ebay.
frankly, i am disappointed in the marketing teams. rare bottle openers and second-hand t-shirts is the best you can offer? really? come on. look, i went to school for journalism but i know a thing or 50 about marketing. overwhelm people. give them choice. where are the belt buckles? the action figures? the watches? those are off the top of my head. surely those with training can do better.
