this post is probably going to invite some sort of pissing contest, but i came across this item on n4g and nearly bitch-slapped my monitor. gamezone asks ‘is excessive realism killing gameplay?’ seriously? slow news day, boys? now, as readers of this blog know all too well, we are no stranger to odd news. however, this is a bit much. i am all about retro gaming. i’ve got an nes, a sega genesis, a gamecube, ps2, an n64, a game boy colour, a game gear, and a psp. all this shit is in addition to the regularily scheduled programming of the ps3.
i’m not comparing dicks sizes, i’m just saying that while everything holds a place in my heart, everything has its place. you can’t expect great graphics from the nes. you simply can’t. no more than you can expect its bits and pieces to be intact 30 or 40 years down the road. also, these games are pioneers. you know, everyone is always going on about how great the first few mega man titles were. yeah? i don’t give out points to something that prides itself on being unbeatable.
same is true for the ps3. i want some realism to my games. i’ve got a controller in my hands – no matter how drunk, tired or whatever i am, i don’t ever confuse that with a laser rifle or steering wheel. and when move drags its ass on scene, you can bet your bippy i’ll never confuse that with a sword either.
some realism in gaming is what makes games great. it isn’t about whether you can afford it, it’s about value. it’s about it being a game, a piece of software. obviously, the interactive movie is going too far, but realistic graphics? fuck yeah. i love going to the gym, but i like downtime too. if my day’s got a bit too much stupidity in it, i like to blow shit up. also, i wasn’t running for my life in some jungle ruin while a truck tried to mow me down. hell no! i was sitting on my couch playing uncharted 2, albeit on the edge of said couch. then when my blackberry rang, i put the game on pause and talked to a friend. because that’s how i play games. if i’m paying almost $70 a game, i want it to be a game.
is excessive bitching about game killing the interest of everyone even remotely into games? if gamezone continues its unchecked stupidity, you bet.
