i’ll never forget when i was playing true crime: new york city and i heard laurence fishburne’s voice in the game. i thought it was so cool. i was fresh out of school, and i thought i was the shit, playing away on my little ps2 in my tiny basement apartment. or samuel l. jackson as officer tenpenny in grand theft auto: san andreas.
fast forward a few years, and i still think it is awesome when a voice i recognize comes out of my speakers. liam neeson as the dad in fallout 3? too cool.
i am not a fan of celebrities at all, but i find that it gives the whole video game industry that extra layer of authenticity. it’s nice to be recognized as an art form if so many different kinds people can come together and collaborate on a project. mainly though, trained actors have the experience and knowledge to deliver a good voice performance. they know that their cadence, their tone, their diction will enhance a scene, and they aren’t afraid of a little hard work.
as it turns out, there are many famous actors in the video game industry. the boys and girls over at videogamer.com have put together a slide show.
