another day, another ridiculous claim by some crazy bastard out in the world. throughout humanity’s history, we have been faced with outlandish claims. the world is flat, women are property, cars are a fad – these all examples of idiocy throughout the ages. as time progresses, i truly feel like we just get more and more toys to fuck up with. naturally, many of us do a magnificent job.
case in point? these total fuck-ups who are against video games in children. i wrote about this a while ago, and it seems that i am just repeating myself. this in turn frustrates me more since i am forced to rob you all of my dazzling wit. the latest is a bunch of alleged doctors who did a ‘study’ of children and found that children get addicted to video games and it ruins them.
The new study found that children who are more likely to become addicted to video games (which the researchers call “pathological” video gaming) are those who spend a lot of hours playing these games, have trouble fitting in with other kids and are more impulsive than children who aren’t addicted. Once addicted to video games, children were more likely to become depressed, anxious or have other social phobias. Not surprisingly, children who were hooked on video games also saw their school performance suffer.
anyone can make baseless claims. as long as you have a channel in which to express yourself, your voice will likely be heard. just because you say something doesn’t make it a fact. it is like a study find out that there is nothing wrong with smoking – and then you find out that big tobacco funded the entire thing.
the authors of this study also failed to have a focus group that makes sense. some cultures are a lot stricter with their children that others. has no one considered that this is singapore we are talking about? there is arguably a MUCH stronger focus on academics over there than there is here. of course anything that deviates from the norm of acceptable, traditional extra-curricular activities will be closely scrutinized. and as everyone knows, if someone is looking for a fault, they will find it. as any psychologist knows, a controlled group yields controlled results. most of all is that gaming does not lead to depression. this is like saying that guns kills people. people kill people, plain and simple.
i cannot stress this enough: PARENTS MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. it is NOT up to the school to teach kids about good, fundamental behaviour. you don’t do your homework. your grades suffer. you fail the grade. ugh, i am so sick of this trend in society and it’s everywhere! you see eight-year-olds who weigh 200 lbs. then it becomes the society’s fault, or the school’s fault. then there are calls for the government to pour taxpayer money into school nutrition programs.
HORSESHIT. if your son or your daughter is a good student, with a strong network of friends balancing a healthy lifestyle with the indulgence of a hobby, who cares? i hold down a full-time job, plus go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week, plus maintain a social life with friends. i come from a close-knit family i see on a regular basis. on top of all that, i have time for other hobbies, house chores, 2 pets, etc.
in between all of that, i play over 35 hours of video games a week. i did that last year too. i got promoted at work. twice.
you know what? i’m a doctor too. take a double dose of ‘shut the fuck up’.
