social gaming is evil. there – i said it. i am really quite tired of hearing people tell me that ‘they play video games too’, and then to proudly reveal that by games they mean farmville, mafia wars or whatever shit storm of the month things is going on at the time.
what. the. fuck.
i am starting to realize that social games are like astrology. it’s like junk food for your brain. it’s like reality tv stars being considered for academy awards. whatever analogy you choose, at the end of the day, it is bullshit with a huge industry behind it.
sure, it’s got a great business model. it’s making certain people pots of money. but what is it offering to people? it doesn’t offer any plot complexities, nor does it offer any ‘yay!’ factor in terms of game mechanics. go here, harvest this, share that. boo. i’ve met cans of paint that are more interesting.
social gaming, at heart, is about the decay in quality assurance. the second you start asking people to put real money into something, you must be accountable. why should your credits expire if you have a death in the family? or something comes up at work? should you really lose out on your investment? hell no.
readwriteweb has a good article detailing the upside of social gaming, but i just don’t see it.
