i can totally get on board with this whole ‘playing video games in class‘ thing. teachers in the states are using little big planet as educational tools.
Fully engaging in the game requires creativity, problem solving, persistence, and sharing — competencies that are increasingly critical to success in the 21st century. Unfortunately, these qualities are not consistently supported by our current educational system. Like many young people today, Maya and her friends are bored with school, and their mediocre grades reflect that attitude.
this is a great thing, ladies and gentlemen. this is exactly what needs to happen in the educational system. i am certainly not advocating some hippie bullshit teaching system, but video games can be used in an educational sense. i have written about it – several times. what i especially like is that it’s being used as a tool to motivate kids. it forces them to think, not just mindless tv watching.
well done, florida.
littlebigplanet action figures
gah. i LOVE these guys. i got the stuffed littlebigplanet figure from them, and i am just so excited that they’re coming out with actual little action figures. it’s like… a miracle or something. it kind of takes that bullshit collector’s edition and shames it to the point where it hides its stupid face.
this little guy runs you about $15. mind you, that excludes the shipping and handling. that’ll probably be another $3 or $4 – but why put a price on happiness, am i right?
the little big planet action figures are about four inches tall – perfect for pretty much any situation, i would say.
interestingly enough, this little man comes in three versions – the tongue thing you see here, the regular face, and the some black and white effort. they’ve got moving parts, and even the little bendy lasso thing!!
anyway. i strongly suggest that everyone reading this head over to thinkgeek.
littlebigplanet sackboy plush
eek! so a while ago, i wrote that i was a bit bummed about the lack of sackboy merch available.
i mentioned the french had an answer. they do, because the french have a knack for being awesome. however, thinkgeek does too! should have known.
perhaps they were started by a gang of french people.
anyway, littlebigplanet sackboy merch can be ordered from thinkgeek. it’s a 6 inch, fully moveable plush glorious thing. there’s also a sack girl, or a combo pack of both. it’s about $12.
wow. so for the longest time, i have been craaaaazy about game merch. i like it, ok? there’s a lot worse i could be doing, i.e. crystal meth, but i like merchandise. a lot of the games i play aren’t really mainstream enough to warrant their own line of collectibles though. the saboteur, for example. fantastic game, but likely not going to get action figures anytime soon.
i drool a little bit everytime i find something, and today is no exception. little_nerdxo has been telling me that ardene has the sackboy from littlebigplanet. naturally though, a girl going into an accessories store asking for video game merch would likely be seen as an act of rebellion, so every time a clerk approaches me and asks if they can help me, i shake my head no. sometimes i look for myself, but they never have it.
bah. i digress. it turns out that once again, the french have the answer. this great place called ‘toys on fire’ in montreal has a whole pile of littlebigplanet merchandise you can order online, or pick up in store. they’ve also got a location in nepean, but i love montreal a lot more.
today, i bring to you a big, old WTF for you-know-who: sony. specifically infamous. this game was a homerun for sony. its first week sales (june 2009) were 176,000 units. it blasted by stuff like littlebigplanet. then, because it was an exclusive title, sony dropped the price and everyone jumped all over that shit because gamers love that strategy. (sony originally tried dropping its pants but gamers tend not to like THAT strategy.)
when the bigwigs started talking about infamous 2, people went rabid. ‘no fucking way’ breathed gamers. several twitter outages were attributed to this news being dropped. lolz. we’re joking about that last part – maybe. the point is that a lot of people went beserk for this game. and why not? it’s wonderful. remember that little weird bike messenger kind of dude and his pervy portly pal? yeah, they were cool, right? plus the storyline was awesome, and you could be either good OR evil. the trophies were fairly simple to get and with a bit of effort, you could go platinum. winnings all around.
however apparently at e3, sony has recently dropped the news that they have, uh, changed the character of one cole mcgrath. not something like ‘changed his filthy-ass outfit he had on at all times’. not ‘gave him a tan’. no. CHANGED him. now he no longer even looks like the same person. i got my hands on some screenshots, and as you can see below, even the characters themselves are weirded out.
infamous 2 screenshots
littlebigplanet 2 - potential screenshot?
what’s a day without an outlandish headline, eh? while little big planet 2 likely will NOT become part of your soul, it is, by all accounts, going to be a damn good game. media molecule really rallied themselves on littlebigplanet, and i can hardly wait for the follow-up.
little_nerdxo and i are busy playing the shit out of this game. i don’t know about her, but it’s definitely earned a place in my heart.
my sister, little_nerdxo, definitely enjoys the gentler side of gaming. she is forever denouncing the rude shooters i get sucked into most nights. give her a puzzle, or adventure game like uncharted 2 and she’ll be set for the evening. even fallout 3 was a good one. of course, i like those too, but i also love to blow shit up. i love mischief too, and collecting stuff.
it’s odd then, that two totally different styles of gaming can be appeased. but they do. we both get our fill of adventure and puzzles, and get to hang out together. the second installment in this series is supposed to be even more social, and i know that we both, along with many fans, are waiting with baited breath.
screenshots from littlebigplanet 2
i’m playing through the first littlebigplanet, and i have to say: WOW. very impressive. i’m usually all about shooters, and cartoon violence, but the little sackman is another man who has captured my heart.
playstationlifestyle.net posted some screenshots of littlebigplanet 2 from media molecule’s recent press-only event in london. from the looks of things, we can expect great and crazy things from this game.
aren’t ps3 exclusives simply glorious?
